Super Rock Team-Up

Here's a poster I finished a few days back for a cool upcoming show featuring a bunch of bands associated with Winnipeg's only rock'n'roll record label, Transistor 66. This piece was inspired by a few hours I recently spent perusing a bunch of mid-'70s Marvel comics that I bought when I was a kid. That may seem like a pretty oddball thing to be influenced by (especially considering how terrible most of those comics are) but never fear, without a doubt I'll find something even more inane to pay homage to in the not-too-distant future. Family Values

I made this cover for a planned sampler CD by Winnipeg's hippest record label Transistor 66. The T66 roster has been expanding so quickly that a final lineup for the sampler has yet to be confirmed, so we are still waiting for this CD to hit the streets. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. More Mass Destruction

As promised here is the third and final installment in the Women Of Mass Destruction poster series. The Gorgon and local garage rockers The Angry Dragons did a series of shows in Eastern Canada back in fall 2008 and this was the official poster for that tour. The version you see here was made for the tour kickoff show in Winnipeg (also featuring excellent local powerpop combo The Sweet Nothings). We also made kustomized versions of this poster for each show on the tour. If I am remembering rightly color prints of this one were available for sale at the Lo Pub show. Women Of Mass Destruction

The Gorgon were an eclectic 3 piece Winnipeg combo, kind of a punky mix of garage, alternative and theatrical art rock. This was the poster for their Corpse Whale CD release party back in 2007. Their only other release was a cover of a Personality Crisis song on a compilation put out by local college radio station CKUW. They broke up a year or so ago. This poster was the first in a 3 poster series I did for Gorgon shows, all involving giant women wreaking havoc. The second entry in the Women Of Mass Destruction series was the American Flamewhip CD release poster which you will find in the archives of this blog. I'll post the final one tomorrow. Vulcan Death Grip

Here's a brand new one, best under the sun. It's the poster for the CD release par-tay for Winnipeg's (mostly-) instrumental luv rock hooligans The Lonely Vulcans. These guys are the only modern instro combo I've heard yet with a pervasive Santo and Johnny influence. Featuring ex-members of the Squareheads, Surfadelics (Winnipeg version, not the UK '80s guys), Accosters, Moe Bi666sley and many more, these guys (and gal) will provide the perfect soundtrack for your next last date and so much more. Wild Weekend

Here's the poster for the Transistor 66 Rock'n'Roll Weekender, which kicks off one week from today. This will be the grand debut of The Angry Dragons great 7" which I was blastin' an advance copy of all day yesterday, plus one man rockabilly combo Bloodshot Bill will be launchin' his brand new CD at the Saturday show. Throw in local rockin' legends The Farrell Bros and the sweet (mostly-) instro sounds of The Lonely Vulcans plus a batch of hip new up-and-comers and you have a weekend to remember (or dismember if you consider the location of the festivities). I spent some time yesterday signing and numbering 50 sharp lookin' silkscreen prints of this poster which you will be able to buy at the show or via the Transistor 66 website if you are so inclined. Maneaters On Motorbikes

Here are a couple of different sleeve designs I made for the Angry Dragons debut CD on Transistor 66 Records. The top one is an alternate design that will replace the original when the CD goes into a second pressing (if all goes according to plan). Right now you can get it as the cover for the cassette (!) release of the songs that are on the CD. The pink and black original design has been used on various Dragons merch and is the cover of the CD that you can buy right now from good old Transistor 66. We're counting down right now to the big release party for the Dragons 7" EP on February 5. I'll put up the poster for that show in the next day or two. Stay tuned for MORE ANTAGONIZIN' ACTION!

Hot Live Guys

The Hot Live Guys have been rockin' Winnipeg for 10 whole years now. Startin' out as some kind of ska combo (?!!), they mutated early on into the kinda spastic, frenzied garage-infused rawk that they have been blasting forth ever since. They were a mainstay of this town's rock'n'roll party scene throughout its early '00s heyday and beyond. Their track Robbin' A Bank was a hilite of Winnipeg Riot!, the comp CD chronicling Winnipeg's past decade of wild r'n'r and they have 3 of their own CDs and a split 7" on their action-packed resume as well. They are callin' it quits just before Xmas and what you see here is the poster I conjured up to help mark their passing. I dunno if any static medium is well suited to capture the flailing blur of rawk action that is their live show but I tried my best. We are printing 50 jumbo silkscreen copies of this poster which will be on sale at the show so plunder that bank account on your way over to the Albert. Their spankin' new album will also be making it's grand debut at the show and I heard something about T-shirts featuring the image above bein' available as well. It should be quite an evening as the HLG rock themselves outta this world one last time. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Rockabilly Rerun

Okay, I know I posted the artwork for the new Rowdymen CD back in the early daze of this blog, but inasmuch as I did some last minute revisions on the image before handing in the final version, and then used that new and improved version to put together this snazzy poster for the CD release party, maybe you all will be so kind as to excuse any redundancy. Looks like this will be a fun show, with local all-girl teen powerpoppers The Paps opening the festivities. Stay tuned for MORE HI-OCTANE ACTION!

Flame Whip Thrill Band

Poster for American Flamewhip's Activate CD release show from last year. Flamewhip are a tuff aggro-blues/rawk combo born from the ashes of The Vagiants. They contributed a great track to the Winnipeg Riot! comp and have 2 fine CD releases on Transistor 66. It seems they are suspended in some kinda cryogenic half-life right now but I understand they are emerging from cold storage to play at the Hot Live Guys farewell show in late December. They're a great hard rockin' band and I was sure happy to get to do this poster design for them. Also on the bill that night were 2 other T66 combos, The Gorgon with their art-primitive girl rock and melodic punkers The Fabulous Kildonans (I am obligated by a local by-law to inform you that Fab K's bassman Mark was a member of Winnipeg's legendary '80s hardcore kingpins The Stretch Marks). A small run of nice glossy prints of this poster were printed for sale at the show, now adding a touch of decorative color to prison cells and opium dens province-wide I am sure. Thanks to Art from T66 for gettin' this here deal together. Flamewhip logo designed by Mr. Johnny Crap. Banjo Stomp

Had a great time last night seeing B. A. Johnston and The Angry Dragons rockin' out at the Lo Pub here in Winnipeg so this poster from a few months back seemed like a natural for today's post. I didn't know much about B. A. and his hard-to-describe music (a mix of Casio keyboards and samplers, minimum wage frustration, basement dwelling loserdom and the theme from The Jeffersons, amongst other things) before working on this poster but seeing his hilarious live show has made me a fan. The Stables have a fun, energetic roots rock sound with a good amount of banjo in the mix, thus inspiring this takeoff on the famous Dueling Banjos scene from Deliverance. I grew up out in the country (and was born way out in the country where my dear old dad was involved in hot rodding and moonshine running in his younger days) so I have always been interested in portraying various aspects of rural Americana, albeit in my usual highly caricatured manner. Which is another way of saying, look for many more drawings of inbred hillbillies and meth-crazed rednecks in very many posts yet to come on this here blog. The Angry Dragons

Sneak preview time. This here is the front sleeve art for the debut 7" of The Angry Dragons, due out sometime in the next couple of months on good old Transistor 66 Records. The Dragons are a truly boss mix of '60s garage, girl group sounds and The Ramones, so you better start saving your pennies for a copy of this thing 'cuz they're only pressin' up 500 of 'em and when they're gone, buddy, you'll be right outta luck. This is my favorite band in the whole wide world and I'm truly and totally privileged to have gotten to design the sleeve for their record. This image is kinda somehow inspired by the totally boss '60s flick Teenage Gang Debs, by the way. Mo' crazed and cryptic crud a'comin' soon... Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Rowdymen

Here be the front cover for the upcoming CD by Winnipeg's rockabilly veterans The Rowdymen. This one will be rocketin' your way courtesy of Manitoba's one and only all-action record label, Transistor 66 Records! As I write these deathless words the band is still working on the recording so I would expect to see this one hitting the street late this year or early in 2010. More new stuff comin' up later today.
