Fan-Made "Fables" Movie Posters by Digitalrich

Fables is one of the hottest and most beloved comic books in recent memory due to its fun and twisted premise of putting our favorite fable characters  - such as Snow White, The Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack among others - literally, to life and make them live amongst human beings. It has garnered multiple critical acclaims and Eisner-awards to cemented itself as one of the best titles in the Vertigo line and comic books in general.

I have stopped reading Fables after issue #84, but I might be getting back on it after seeing these cool fan-made movie posters that were digitally manipulated to put artists such as Ryan Gosling, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and the lovely Zooey Deschanel into each popular Fables' shoes. I personally like the idea of Gosling as the janitor-turned-powerful Prince Flycatcher, and Dean Morgan as Bigby Wolf. Deschanel being Snow White doesn't work with me though. 

Anyway, thanks to ComicsAlliance and Gamma Squad for featuring these, and especially to Digitalrich himself, who took the time to fulfill every fans dream of having a Fables-inspired film adaptation though his work.

NBC's New Fairy Tale-Horror-Drama Series 'The Grimm' A 'Fables' Rip-Off!?? WTF?

Fuck, I've seen (and read) this somewhere before. Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales? Fables? Damn.

Here's the official series description according to NBC:

Grimm is a new drama series inspired by the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales. Remember the fairy tales your parents used to tell you before bedtime? Those weren't stories -- they were warnings.

Nick Burkhardt (David Guintoli Turn The Beat Around) thought he prepared himself for the realities of working as a homicide detective until he started seeing things he couldn't quite explain. When his ailing Aunt Marie (guest star Kate Burton, Grey's Anatomy) arrives, Nick's life turns upside down when she reveals they are descendants of an elite group of hunters, also known as "Grimms," who fight to keep the balance of humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. 

What is this? Fables with some added supernatural 'Twilight' crap? Fuck this. I'm disgusted by how they to rip one of the most beloved comic book series of this era and then make a lame TV series out of it. The trailer above sucks and I'm pretty sure that the whole series will blow. 

How can they make something like this and then not make an authentic, high-quality Fables series that we can all enjoy? Fuck damn.

My Favorite On-Going Comic Book Titles

I usually chunk on graphic novels that have already ended years ago, classics such as V for Vendetta, All-Star Superman, We3, Batman: The Killing Joke to name a few - mainly because they are easier to read - in the sense that you can get them already collected as a single book and read them right away without having to wait for months (or even years) for the next issue unlike monthly (or bi-monthly) on-going series.

But I've got a 3 titles that I'm following right now and keep an eye on whenever have my spare time. Here's a rundown::

Superman Monthly

I know. The current "Grounded" storyline by J. Michael Straczynski sucks and even when he already left the project, it still... STINKS. Right now its on #708th issue (which I was able to read yesterday) which is written by Chris Robertson. I have to say that a change for a writer definitely removed some of that bad taste that I and a lot of Superman fans were getting from the previous issues. With that, I have hopes now that Chris can turn this series around and make it all "Super" again. 

And no matter what other's say or no matter how the storylines suck, I'm still staying behind this one. I'm such a sucker for everthing Superman.

The Walking Dead

Definitely one of the best series out there today. I actually started right from issue # 1 a year ago and was able to catch up in a month. The latest issue #80 is currently out and I'm eagerly waiting for the next issues to hit the shelves so I can say things like "damn", "shucks" "s**t", and other explicit sh.it while reading (oops sorry). That's how good this zombie-apocalypse-themed comic book is. 

Its so good that they made a TV adaptation and went on to sign for a second season ready to be aired this October 2011. If that won't make you read this one, I don't know what. Maybe the zombies will.

Fables

My favorite on-going title. Seeing all those lovable fable and folklore characters twisted so good that I can't help but just be entertained. Bill Willingham's writing is amazing, can't even complain with the art and there are a lot of endless possibilities in store for the characters and their storylines.Really, few can argue that this is up there with Vertigo's best titles since Neil Gaiman's Sandman. 

I'm on issue #78 and i've got a couple more issues to tread by before the latest  - Fables #102 which is hitting the stores today.

Random Ramblings: Current Reading ... Cinderella by Chrissie Zullo... Superman to be "physical"... and some cool art from K.Rocafort and Olly Moss

I immediately became a fan of artist J. H. Williams III after reading is awesome work and the latest Batwoman #0 issue to which I quickly searched for his previous works. Again, I am pretty much new to comic books so anything good before the 2000s for sure is out of my radar. But thanks to the wonderful thing called the Internet, I'm able to get my hands on one of this earliest works in 1999:

This has 32 issues in all and I have just started reading the first 10 issues, so I won't make a review yet (later I will), but this is one of a kind comic book that mixes the superhero-action genre with spirituality, religion, magic, mysticism, and history. I'm gonna save the other details after I read it.

I stopped reading Fables at issue #60 almost 3 weeks ago because I got a little tired reading the storylines I guess. Its not that its because of bad story telling or art - i guess its just that you have to pause a little bit and continue it later. You can't read the same thing and see the same characters all over again, can you?

Speaking of Fables, it spawned a couple of stand-alone spin-offs like Cinderella: Fables are Forever, which by the way has been released just yesterday!  . For your enticement, here is the awesome cover for its very issue #1, courtesy of the beautiful and talented Chrissie Zullo:

Im a sucker for anything Superman so here's another "update" concerning the upcoming 2012(?) film to be directed by Zack Snyder. According toa n interview with SFX (via ComicBookResources), Snyder says that  he thinks "Superman needs to be physical" this time around. 

Oh hell yeah, he needs to be. There have been four Superman movies already and the last time I saw him in a lot of action is way back in Superman II. He's the effin' Man of Steel anyway - faster than a speeding bullet, leaps tall buildings in a single bound, and can lift a kryptonite land as big as Los Angeles without him dying - so there is no reason why Supes can't punch something or somebody's teeth off to outer space this time. Don't fail us Zack. 

We need less of these "Atlas" themed scenes.

Off To A Lazy Start

The Christmas season is over and so the budgets are back to square one. And when I mention square one, that means - zero. Folks have abruptly stopped buying all kinds of stuff right after January 01, 2011 and that was always the trend every year since the worldwide economic struggles began.

Good thing I made most out of the opportunity last month to gain slightly more revenue than I usually generate, because this month is just plain lazy. Almost no calls at all, I ain't selling stuff that much after the first week -and I know it is early, but still, it doesn't look like very good to me.

But I'm not talking it too seriously, I will just tread water for right now, take it easy, enjoy the fruits of my labor, go to work everyday and give it my 100%, all of that while reading a lot of Fables. Bill Willingham just got me hooked.

Comic Book Review: Fables # 1

Remember Snow White, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, Jack and The Beanstalk, and all those children stories? I know you do, but have you wondered if they really "lived happily ever after"? I have asked that question a couple of times and to my great surprise, I have found the answer... well, not exactly the answer but more of like somebody's own personal twisted concept of what came after to these characters.

Welcome to the Fabletown - a secret place in modern day New York City where our beloved folklore and fairytale characters (who call themselves "Fables") dwell and blend with the human society after an evil entity known as "The Adversary" took over their Homelands and drove them out in the process. So there you go, it was not "happily ever after" after all. 

Some of our main characters are introduced in this fabulous first issue like Jack Horner - the guy in the Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack O Lantern and other Jack stories; Bigby Wolf - yes folks, its the Big Bad Wolf from the Three Little Pigs who in the comic, is the sheriff/police in Fabletown; Rose Red - the party-going sister of Snow White and the girlfriend of Jack; Prince Charming - ex-husband of Snow White (and a bunch of other fairytale ladies), now a full time womanizer and all around liar; and last but not the least: Snow White - the boss who runs just about anything at Fabletown.

So let me get this straight: Snow White has a sister which we never knew before and is divorced from Prince Charming, then the Wolf is now a good guy and is a freaking law enforcer. How's that for an updated version of these centuries old characters? 

Created and written by Bill Willingham, Fables is nothing short but extraordinary, fresh, and twisted. His whole concept is just plain ridiculous but damn entertaining. It simply works! I have never read of anything like it, especially this first issue that kept me intrigued until the end of the page.

Where's the apple?

It deals with the murder mystery theme - Sheriff Bigby Wolf  investigates on the truth behind the apparent death of Snow White's sister, Rose Red. Combining suspense, logic, mystery, and an endless loop of possibilities, Willingham makes it very hard for the reader to guess the possible ending or solution to the dilemma, while keeping an engaging and very amusing dialogue between his characters until the climactic revelation that would surely satisfy even the most non-hardcore fan of the genre. It is absolute story telling genius.

And the art isn't too shabby either.

Add to that the cameos of other familiar characters such as Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio, fantastic humor (e.g "cocksmanship") and some sexually-tintillating-yet-funny panels, you would surely want more and grab the next issue.

...to this. Its good to be him after all.

Fables has not yet ended and even if it ends tomorrow, this series has already made history as one of Vertigo's best-selling titles and one the most memorable graphic novels, along with Y: The Last Man, Preacher and Sandman with 12 Eisner awards under its belt.  And if that won't make you dig this, then maybe you have to make an appointment with your psychiatrist.
