Exclusive Photo Of Henry Cavill As Superman... In Costume!

Been busy these days so no comic book reviews as of now, but I'll definitely get back to it some time. For now dig yourselves on this photo of the new Superman:

Click for full size image

Right now I've got mixed reactions to the costume, but I really like the foldings on the cape and how long and big it is. Made him a little bit badass. As for the tights, I'm sure that the red underwear is gone for good.

Only issues I have so far is mainly the "S" shield. It looks like the old-school 50s crest used by George Reeves (may God bless his soul), and finally what's up with the hair? No spitcurl? Somebody get this guy a good hairdresser!

Man of Steel is slated for a summer 2013 release and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, and Russell Crowe. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen).

Review: Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch
Written by Steve Shibuya and Zack Snyder
Directed by Zack Snyder
Released by Warner Brothers

I was totally waiting to watch this film and  I was able to do that yesterday. I was giddy about the whole film because of the trailer  (which hyped it really damn well) and mainly because its co-written and directed by Zack Snyder. Everybody knows that he is about as talented as anybody in the business today especially with his mind-bending visuals and cinematography, and therefore I was expecting a good show from him.

Did his first all-written/directed film live up to the hype?

Snyder creates a simple story formula that focuses on 4 (sexy and foxy) girls trying to escape their abusive captors. Led by Babydoll (Emily Browning), they have to muster up their inner courage to find and collect 5 mystical/symbolic items in order to escape their dark sanctuary and gain their lives and freedom once and for all. Each attempt to gain a symbolic item starts with a supposed dance/performance from Babydoll - which was really never shown - and is rather  "represented" by her traveling into her own dream world, which doesn't really mash-up with the storyline and makes it all too confusing, making me go "WTF?" too many times.

I seriously think that Snyder wanted to tell a pretty good tale of "female empowerment" or "empowerment" in general - taking control of your destiny and fighting for what you believe is right kind of thing - but by heavily dissociating what is real, Snyder takes out the whole cinematic experience which should consist of a good story element that at least makes sense aside from the nice visuals.

Some parts were boring, dragging on for too long, and I remember going like - "what the fuck is happening now?" - several times in the movie. My girlfriend even asked me that frickin' question about 5 times (we're together watching this), and seriously, I can't blame her. Even my mind was bent

Character development was something missing from the movie as well as a result of the mindless storytelling. The characters are all one-dimensional with no sense of direction at all. The only good performances that came out were the ones from Oscar Isaac, who plays the role of the main antagonist in the film and Carla Gugino as the girl's dance instructor.  Isaac's performance was absolutely full of emotion and was the only one that brought anything special to be remembered while Gugino flawlessly executing the Russian accent   throughout the film.

Now on to the good: as expected from all Zack Snyder created films, you expect a lot of good CGI and mouthwatering effects - and that's what this movie has. Whether its Babydoll and the girls battling three giant samurai-robots (with fucking machine guns) in Feudal Japan, or them hacking-and-slashing some fire-breathing dragon in a castle, or gunning down steam-punk clockwork soldiers in a World War I setting with a help of a futuristic robot and many other over-the-top fantasy worlds that looks so real, Snyder is still probably, one of the best (if not the best) and most talented directors out there with a real penchant for crafting some of the best slow-motion action scenes and awe-inspiring visual effects both  stunning and elegant. These moments were unrealistically good, its like a video-game that you can't play.

Then you partner that with some nice soundtrack that they incorporated in this film, with some remixed songs by artists like Bjork and Queen like the remade "We Will Rock" you theme. They also used tracks that were sung by Emily Browning herself as well which was impressive and that broadway duet from Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac. Gotta give credit to that department.

Costumes that mixes the modern/medieval styles are real cool and creative I have to say -  with Babydoll's katana-wielding and Sailormoon-esque attire falling in for first place in the cosplay category.   And frankly, that's all Snyder brings on to this movie... all the cool stuff for your viewing pleasure.

Not to mention all of the sexual innuendos that underlie especially when the girls showing up in tight-hugging corsets and fishnets, showing their busty cleavages and tasty asses. Babydoll looks like an absolute jail-bait with all that pigtails and miniskirt going on, and how I wish Snyder showed a little bit of her dancing. I bet people would have had some boners with Emily Browning shaking her booty, but to my disappointment, we get nothing of that shit. Damn you Zack. That's the least best thing you could have given to us.

Which brings me to one final point: though the movie looks some kind of a childish, PG-13 comic book spinoff that kids could enjoy, Sucker Punch is one big deceiving piece of film that shouldn't be shown to kids (especially to little boys). There are too many mature and sexual tones (hello Jamie Chung, would you suck my lollipop too?) that is hidden behind the innocent faces of its lead actresses that could lead  them to search for "Emily Browning / Jamie Chung / Abbie Cornish nude pictures" on Google for some real eye-candy and then fire bullets on their keyboards.

Sucker Punch could have been a better-than-mediocre movie had Snyder focused on creating a real nice story-arc that actually knits together rather than putting all his attention into giving us eye-pleasing dream worlds with a lot of breasts and asses. But after all the crap, this film  could still  be enjoyed by some because its not all 100% bad, as I have written. But then again, if you put it all together and evaluate it  - the whole flick is a little bit frustrating.  Literally. It's like getting a blowjob from a real beautiful, hot and tight bodied girl for 2 hours who doesn't make you cum.

Wait, did I just compared Sucker Punch to an effin' failed blowjob?

(By the way, I didn't like Vanessa Hudgen's new scandal pics. She's still looks better with her clothes on.)

P.S - I still believe that Zack Snyder is one hell of a  director, but he's got some polishing to work out in terms of his scriptwriting and storytelling. Only then he could make his own movie that "OWNS". And for Superman fans out there, let us hope that he will not make the same shit that the did here with the upcoming 2012 reboot, or we will be damned. Let us cross our fucking fingers.

Academy Award Nominee Amy Adams Set To Play 'Lois Lane'

Amy Adams, recently coming from  an Academy-award nomination for her work in The Fighter along side Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale was selected to portray intrepid reporter Lois Lane and is the seventh woman to play the role.

At 36 years old, she doesn't really look that old and plus, she's a very mature actress whose acting chops are necessary for the role of Superman's girlfriend. And a little bit of trivia,  Henry Cavill who plays Superman  is a lot more younger than Adams. If you don't believe me, go check out their birth dates yourself.

But that doesn't matter at all. And in my opinion, actually better not to go with a young actress again (see Kate Bosworth). With her casting, I really like where this film is heading for now. Looking good so far.

The still untitled Superman film is directed by Zack Snyder and is scheduled to fly on December 2012.

Saw "Watchmen" For The Nth Time...

After watching Zack Snyder's masterfully filmed comic book movie Watchmen (based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons) a gazillion times, I'm still enjoying it. And even though the movie has its fair share of critics, most notably one of the co-creators of the graphic novel where it was based from - the great Alan Moore - I have to say that it was a success and undoubtedly one of the best comic book movies.

Synopsis via IMDB:

In a gritty and alternate 1985 the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown, but after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so discover a deeper and far more diabolical plot.

Trust me, that snyopsis is deceiving. Deceiving in the sense that it was described as having too simple of a plot. My friends, this movie is MORE than that.

The movie is as real as you can possibly get and you can never go wrong with the cast  (which doesn't include A-list names that actually made the film even better) and Zack Snyder's directing. And the heart-stopping climactic twist is perfectly brought to life like it was Just torn off of a page from the comic book itself which, actually describes most of the movie too. Everything was just fit together as if these guys were destined to do this adaptation of one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of all time.

I have read the original 1985 graphic novel itself and honestly, Snyder nailed it with this flick. It gave me a lot than I could ever hoped for a Watchmen adaptation and I applaud Snyder for staying true to the source material because it might not have worked if he tweaked it too much and thus making the whole movie a big disappointment. The comic book scenes and dialogues are amazingly the same, the fight choreography is very much realistic, the characterization is just splendid,(I still remember every line from Moore's writing while watching the film) the story is still as powerful and engagingas it ever wars 24 years later, and Malin Akerman's slow motion sex scene with her tits exposed are not that bad either despite that whole scene's awkward-ness (at least for me). I'm just glad to see this absolutely classic brought back to life.

Plus, it  probably has one of the best film intros ever made (probably because of the great "Times A-Changing" song by the immortal Bob Dylan, but still...) in history, with Snyder able to tell most of the story in less than 6 minutes. Its epic movie making at its finest. Here's the link if you haven't watched it yet (embed request is disabled):

And if you haven't seen this thought-provoking movie, please do because this is nothing like you have ever seen and experienced before in a superhero film. Sure, it has its lows and horrible moments, but the good things simply outweigh the bad ones. It was simply wonderful and I won't get tired watching it over and over again.

Random Ramblings: Current Reading ... Cinderella by Chrissie Zullo... Superman to be "physical"... and some cool art from K.Rocafort and Olly Moss

I immediately became a fan of artist J. H. Williams III after reading is awesome work and the latest Batwoman #0 issue to which I quickly searched for his previous works. Again, I am pretty much new to comic books so anything good before the 2000s for sure is out of my radar. But thanks to the wonderful thing called the Internet, I'm able to get my hands on one of this earliest works in 1999:

Promethea with legendary author Alan Moore

This has 32 issues in all and I have just started reading the first 10 issues, so I won't make a review yet (later I will), but this is one of a kind comic book that mixes the superhero-action genre with spirituality, religion, magic, mysticism, and history. I'm gonna save the other details after I read it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I stopped reading Fables at issue #60 almost 3 weeks ago because I got a little tired reading the storylines I guess. Its not that its because of bad story telling or art - i guess its just that you have to pause a little bit and continue it later. You can't read the same thing and see the same characters all over again, can you?

Speaking of Fables, it spawned a couple of stand-alone spin-offs like Cinderella: Fables are Forever, which by the way has been released just yesterday!  . For your enticement, here is the awesome cover for its very issue #1, courtesy of the beautiful and talented Chrissie Zullo:

Superspy-ish, and chillingly sexy. Wow.

Do not forget to visit her blog and deviant page for more of her lovely artwork, and show some support by getting a copy of Cinderella Fables Are Forever # 1.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Im a sucker for anything Superman so here's another "update" concerning the upcoming 2012(?) film to be directed by Zack Snyder. According toa n interview with SFX (via ComicBookResources), Snyder says that  he thinks "Superman needs to be physical" this time around.

Oh hell yeah, he needs to be. There have been four Superman movies already and the last time I saw him in a lot of action is way back in Superman II. He's the effin' Man of Steel anyway - faster than a speeding bullet, leaps tall buildings in a single bound, and can lift a kryptonite land as big as Los Angeles without him dying - so there is no reason why Supes can't punch something or somebody's teeth off to outer space this time. Don't fail us Zack.

We need less of these "Atlas" themed scenes.

Finally, two more pieces of sharp and mind-whacking art for your viewing pleasure from Kenneth Rocafort and Olly Moss:

This is it for this week folks. Gonna take some rest 'cause its my day off. Have a great weekend everyone and take care!

The New Superman: Henry Cavill

The search is finally over. And sorry for me and Routh fans out there,, Brandon Routh is NOT reprising the role of Superman in the upcoming 2012 film reboot  (reported to be titled Superman: Man of Steel) to be directed by Zack Snyder

The lucky guy chosen is Henry Cavill, who has apparently auditioned before multiple times for the same role only to be rejected. He was once called the "unluckiest man in Hollywood" because of that, but I think that's all going to change now as he finally got the opportunity to play the role of the most iconic character in comic book history and the chance to revive the whole Superman film franchise. I certainly haven't watched this guy on TV, but from the looks of this photoshopped pic, he sure looks ok for the role:

Here is the official statement from WB courtesy of ComicBookMovie:

HENRY CAVILL WILL TAKE ON THE DUAL ROLE OF CLARK KENT / SUPERMAN IN THE NEW FILM FROM

WARNER BROS. PICTURES AND LEGENDARY PICTURES

BURBANK, CA, January 30, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

What do you think guys?

Super Talk: My Take On The 2012 Superman Film, Wishing For A Supes' Costume Tweak and More....

Alright, let's go down to some Superman shall we? Haven't created a single Superman entry since my comic book review about All-Star Superman and its direct to DVD animation (which is going to come out in February) so I think this article is just in time (and my friend Marj is asking me a lot of questions so I attempt to answer all of them here).

So, it has been announced way back last month that Zack Snyder (director of Watchmen, 300 and the upcoming Sucker Punch) will direct the new 2012 Superman film under the production and writing of Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Inception, The Dark Knight) and David Goyer respectively.  according to an interview with Hero Complex, Nolan stated that they've got brilliant ideas for the new flick which will be a complete reboot of the whole franchise - after Brian Singer's 2006 Superman Returns failed to meet expectations.

I've got no problem with Nolan and Snyder teaming up to do this for I think that Nolan is a great director, and the same can be said for the latter. I have watched all of their films and I loved them all. David Goyer's script writing is also a thing of beauty and it worked obviously on both of Nolan's Batman films so I can't complain anything at all with this team that WB put up. I really think it was the most logical thing to do. and makes me wish nothing but the best for the revival of the greatest superhero with these men on the forefront.

I have also read somewhere that an idea was pitched about doing a trilogy just like the Godfather films, chronicling the life of Superman right from his birth and escape from the doomed Planet Krypton, up to his final years and death as the Earth's sun begins to supernova. Unfortunately, this idea was eventually scrapped.

They were also thinking of making Superman almost "an angry god" at one point in the film, possibly an attempt to show the Man of Steel's other side that we don't usually see. A brooding, dark, angry Superman.

Let us see how would a bad-ass Superman would look like... hmmm... maybe this very cool cinematic trailer from DC Universe Online would do it for you (Bad-ass Supes starts on the 3:30 mark):

-----------------------------

Now let's talk costume. I really believe that Superman's red tights should be removed and that creators should design a slightly updated version of it. One good reason is to enable Superman to be "relatable" to the new generation of fans, because in these day and age, wearing your briefs outside your pants is not a good thing anymore. Second, because of the sole reason that the Man of Steel would rock without the tights on. Seriously.

Check out these costume designs from the cancelled Superman film titled Superman: Flyby (supposed to be directed by JJ Abrams) - which was supposed to be the film that would revive the franchise more than 5 years ago, before they scratched it, only to eventually ask Singer to create Superman Returns. The concept art by Steve Johnson could make great ideas for Kal-El's new costume... if they would ever decide to tweak it:

[Thanks to Comics Alliance for these photos]

I have to say these are pretty easy on the eyes and they are familiar - meaning, they don't stray too far away from the iconic red and blue costume. Maybe except for the beaded belt, every single art is a good candidate for a new Supes garb.

Then there is another one that I particularly liked from an artist from deviantArt that totally reeks of coolness( I totally forgot his name so please if you know his name or deviant handle, feel free to let me know):

I love the Kryptonese-designed belt and how his cape is no longer tucked under his shoulders. And again, no tights. Now imagine that being in the movie and we've got a complete Superman film revival that we should be all looking forward to.

--------------------------

Finally, there's the hunt for the actor to play Superman. Who is going to be the lucky guy? I bet they are going to stick with the time honored tradition of choosing an unknown actor just like what WB did with casting Christopher Reeve n the first ever Superman flick that started the whole superhero film genre. It worked out again in 2006 by casting another unknown in Brandon Routh and so I think the magic could work again.

Personally, I would like Routh to give it a shot once more. He played Clark/Superman in Superman Returns just fine and I believe he can do better the 2nd time around with a great production team. He's going to be a perfect fit. But then again, its not for me or the fans to decide.

And of course, a superhuman being needs a super-opponent. There had been rumors about putting Doomsday (the Kryptonian monster who killed Superman in the highly publicized 1992 comic book storyline "The Death of Superman") against Big Blue, as well as the uber-intelligent Brainiac. I would like to see Braniac in the future film only because the Doomsday thing is just getting old already,  and plus, the green skinned alien is the only one who could give Superman a hard time without ever getting into an Earth-pounding slugfest, which makes for a more interesting story as far as im concerned.

What do you think? Should they remove the tights? And should Routh be casted again to play Clark Kent and Superman? If you think otherwise, who should be chosen to portray our favorite Kryptonian?

[Thanks to Comic Vine and DC Wikia for the image of Brainiac and Doomsday]

Sucker Punch Trailer

An action-fantasy movie ala Alice In Wonderland only with guns, swords and big robots? That's what Zack Snyder (director of Watchmen and 300) is bringing in to the table this 2011 with an ensemble cast of gorgeous ladies -  Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens - that looks to have more of those familiar "slow-mo" scenes. I liked Snyder's aforementioned films , and I'm looking forward to see if this new flick would have anything new to offer.  Check out the trailer and see it for yourself.
