Tired.

I'm all tired and burned out.

I may not be reading nor reviewing any comic books this week - which is a shame actually - because there are so many good titles that released their latest issues for this month.

Oh well, that's life. Sometimes you just have to take a step away from the noise of the whole world.

Kerry Callen's Golden Age Superman Strip Is So Damn Hilarious.

Special thanks again to ComicsAlliance for introducing me to Kerry Callen's blog where I found his absolutely funny comic strip featuring the Golden Age Superman. It cracked me up so good that it immediately became one of my all-time favorite comic book panels/strips of all time. Check it out below.

Callen has done so many amazing renditions of classic comic book panels where he twisted them to make them stranger, funnier or just plain crazier for everyone's viewing pleasure. You can check all of his cool works in his blog.

The Weekend Recap - 03/20/11

I thought of doing this recap thing every week (that is if I had done a lot of things during my day-offs) where I would talk about the different things that I did and saw during the weekend... in short, just about anything under the sun - and I said to myself: "That would be a great idea for my blog!", since I don't have much time to write during work hours unlike before. So, without further ado, the first ever Comically Graphic Weekend Recap:

Tantananaaaaa!!!

This is not my dvd box, but I own one. Finally.

Bought an original DVD copy  of the DC Original Animated Series All-Star Superman based on the Eisner-winning graphic novel by writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely. The packaging is awesome, the dvd box art is simply stunning and its definitely worth adding to my Superman collection. Can't wait to watch it soon. The greatest story of Earth's Greatest Protector is finally in my hands. Bwahahaha! *evil smirk*

Anyone who has played a Bioware video game RPG like Dragon Age, Mass Effect or Star Wars KOTR is aware of how amazing it is to beat game and have the final boss kneeling before you asking for mercy. And what a great feeling it was beating Mephistopheles in critcally-acclaimed old school Bioware game NeverWinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark. Its like my d*ck just grew to 8 inches total. Haha. He was a piece of cake using my level 27 Fighter/Rogue/Blackguard who totally massacred him. I wish he was tougher.. But thank you Bioware for the experience. Great game. I'm gonna come back again with an arcane archer this time and hunt his ass one more time.

Watched "I Am Number Four" with my girlfriend yesterday and we both thought that it was a nice movie. If you are the type who doesn't want any of the complicated storylines and a lot of the boring "30 minute talk" scenes in some films and just want some good 'ol fashioned "come on let's get this over with and kick-some damn ass" action scenes with a lot of cool visual effects - then this is the movie for you.

The story is simple: John Smith is an alien from another planet (of course), his kind is being hunted down by the bad guys (three have already been killed and he is the 4th on the list - hence the movie title) who are also plotting a massive planatary- scale invasion and therefore, he has to control all of his new found powers, find his other alien friends and beat the ugly, baldheaded monsters to ashes before they kill him and the people he cares for.

During the first minutes of the movie, I immediately realized the similarities of the plot to Smallville - and not suprisingly because during the credits it was shown that the screenplay was written by the two former producers who started the ongoing Superman-based TV series - Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. And since the movie is produced by Transformers director Michael Bay, I Am Number Four packs some bad-ass sci-fi action scenes, CGI and special effects that you will surely enjoy despite the loopholes in the plot. Not a bad film overall in my opinion.

Had dinner with my former online friends (former because they had become my friends in real life now) and it was a blast. A whole night of good food and laughter. Its wonderful how the internet connects the dots in your life and adds more dots connected to your life - oh the power of teh Intarwebz.  LOL.

And finally, Happy 13th Month to me and my cuddly bear. We almost forgot it last night because we're just so damn tired. Yep, its 1 year and a month now and still going strong. Time goes by so fast.

So that's it for this week! Back to work now.

Latest Action Comics #900 Cover!

Superman will be back next April on the issue of Action Comics #900 and will finally replace Lex Luthor as its main protagonist. Yep, Lex has been in the pages of Action Comics for over a year now and truth be told, it was an amazing run for The Man Of Steel's greatest adversary. Got to thank Pete Woods and Paul Cornell for that.

And of course, a much anticipated return needs a spectacular cover. Here is the amazing variant cover art for AC #900 courtesy of superstar painter Alex Ross:

Now how sweet is that?

For those of you who don't know why this cover is such a big deal for Superman fans (including me), it is because of the fact that this variant is a throwback to the classic Action Comics # 1 cover by Superman co-creator Joe Shuster (the other was writer Jerry Siegel) - which a by the way costs between $1 - $1.5 million USD, depending on the quality - making it the most desired comic book for collectors.

All-Star Superman DVD Box Art and Trailer

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's award-winning 12-issue limited series All-Star Superman is one of my most favorite Superman tales and arguably the best ever told. It takes the Man of Steel back to the roots of his character by playing with his mortality and focuses on how he spends his last moments on Earth after finding out that he is suffering a severe case of radiation poisoning.

And now, DC is bringing the whole comic book to life with an original animated movie and is scheduled to be released on February 2011. I can't wait to get my hands on this to witness the world's greatest superhero save the world - ONE LAST TIME.

Check out the DVD Box art and the trailer below for some All-Star goodness.

Comic Book Review: All Star Superman

All Star Superman
Issues: 12
Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Frank Quitely
Published by DC Comics

Obviously whoever visits this site knows who my favorite comic book character is - yes, the Big Blue Boy Scout, the Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Tomorrow... Superman.

He's been in the comics industry for 70 years and counting, and his enduring popularity is the stuff of legend. You could see him almost everywhere and anywhere: to tshirts, dvds, toys, internet, comic books, books etc. Hell, i even see the iconic Superman "S" shield painted on jeepneys and tricycles.

So since I love Big Blue, I picked up this book, All-Star Superman.  At first I thought it was a Superman story with all big DC characters such as Wonder Woman, Batman, etc.  But no,  there was no Batman or any of the Justice League members, except for Lois Lane of course, his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, and a couple of other supporting characters like Jimmy Olsen! Not only that, it also features characters from Krypton and Superman's history that I've never heard of before who gets their their own shot at the Man of Steel.

Superman is living the last year of his life after being diagnosed with a fatal dose of radiation poisoning. This raises up a whole bunch of questions like: "What your days are numbered? What would you do to make it all worthwhile?"  Morrison plays on the hero's mortality here which sets up a very beautiful and touching story with Superman trying to accomplish 12 tasks, including one last attempt to save mankind before he dies - that I believe is one of the greatest accomplishments he has ever done in his 70 year existence.

Colorful, heartwarming stories and plot devices will sometimes rip your heart out while some chapters will make you smile and make you feel so good that you just want to read it all over again. Grant Morrison concocts perfect mix of Golden and Silver-Age-esque storylines partnered with Modern-Age Superman sensibilities that wonderfully works wonders.

Another great thing about this book is that everybody almost gets his/her own spotlight , from Supes himself,  up to Jimmy Olsen who actually gets to become a big-bad-ass monster! In addition to that, you will also get to see a Superman co-creator draw his greatest creation, relived for the very first time in modern comics, and many more.

 The essence of Superman.
There is action, drama, romance, heart-stopping scenes,  and of course, an incredible finale (against Solaris and Lex Luthor) and that would make even the most hateful Superman guy out there love him.  A simple story made from years of collected Superman tales and masterfully weaved by Grant Morrisson tells us exactly why Superman is the greatest superhero of all time.  Add Quitley's refreshing art, and it gives us more than we could ask for a Superman novel.

To me this is one of the best Superman and DC comic books/stories of all time. It is an epic that would be remembered forever as arguably the greatest - if not the greatest - Superman tale ever told. If you haven't read this yet, go pick it up and savor the adventure of a lifetime with the hero who started it all.
